Project Overview

This case study highlights one of several Sydney Water pipeline projects supporting more sustainable, reliable infrastructure for Sydney.

One of the projects in Sydney Water’s Malabar System Investment Program (MSIP) involves construction of a new pipeline between the Liverpool to Ashfield Pipeline (LAP) and the AquaNet advanced treatment plant at Fairfield which supplies the Rosehill Recycled Water Scheme.

Fulton Hogan, the head contractor to Sydney Water, delivered the pipeline works, with Iplex supplying Poliplex polyethylene pipe and KenKar Plastics providing welding services to support pipeline construction.

The Challenge

Sydney Water and its contractor Fulton Hogan needed a pipeline solution that could handle high flows, be installed using both open trench and horizontal directional drilling (HDD), and deliver long-term reliability with minimal disruption.

The Solution

Iplex supplied approximately 400 metres of Poliplex 630mm SDR7.4 polyethylene pipe for the project. The pipe’s consistent quality and robust design made it ideal for both trenched and trenchless installation methods, carried out by Fulton Hogan. KenKar Plastics, engaged as the welding contractor, managed the on-site welding scope for the supplied pipe.

Consistency in pipe wall thickness is essential for efficient welding. When quality is reliable, welders can work with confidence - minimising delays and avoiding rework. The result is smoother project delivery, with time and cost savings across the board.

Installation Experience

KenKar Plastics’ Project Engineer, Damien Hefferman, shared that the standout feature of the Iplex pipe was its uniform wall thickness. This consistency made welding and internal debeading straightforward, helping support an efficient, high-quality installation.

“The consistency of the pipe’s wall thickness made our job much easier. Welding and internal debeading went smoothly, which is exactly what you want on a project of this scale.”

Project Outcomes

The new AquaNet pipeline project is set to support more sustainable and reliable infrastructure outcomes for a more reliable recycled water supply for local industry. Our dedicated project team and Technical Product Manager worked closely with Fulton Hogan to supply high-quality Poliplex PE100 pipe for the works, while KenKar Plastics supported the welding scope.
