Compression Fittings

Iplex stocks a comprehensive range of Plasson compression fittings. Plasson have been providing high quality products and innovative solutions to connect Australian pipelines for over 40 years. Australian pipelines are installed in wide ranging conditions from residential plumbing to underground mines. Plasson’s unique design features, which ensure joints can be made and re-used, have proven themselves in all environments.

Applications

Applications

Mechanical connections and branches on PE pipes used in:

  • Water supply
  • Compressed air
  • Pressure sewer
  • Chemical dosing
  • Plasson fittings are available to join PE pipes to CU, PVC, PB, PEX, GS, CPVC, uPVC, ABS and rural Poly

Advantages

The following outlines the features and benefits of Plasson Compression Fittings

Features Benefits
Ease of use Fittings are hand tightened on all rural poly pipe sizes and hand tight plus ½ turn with wrenches on metric pipe 40mm and above.
Strong Plasson compression fittings exceed many of the mechanical requirements specified within the Australia/New Zealand standard.
Abrasion and corrosion resistant PE has high abrasion resistance - the Plasson fitting body encapsulates the PE pipe, allowing the transport of abrasive materials.
Tough

Plasson compression fittings are made from a polypropylene copolymer which has exceptional resistance to impact and mechanical damage.

UV stable Plasson compression fitting resin formulations contain Carbon Black to inhibit UV degradation. Carbon Black imparts high UV resistance over long periods in harsh Australian environments.
Lightweight Plasson compression fittings are easy to transport and use in some of the most difficult in-trench, overhead, above and below ground conditions.

Temperature Effects

The ‘Design Life’ of Plasson compression fittings is 50 years when used to transport fluids at 20 °C at a maximum pressure of 16bar. The 50 year period is a historic and somewhat arbitrary figure – the actual lifespan of fittings is expected to be many decades longer. Plasson fittings can be used at temperatures above 20 °C, however the pipe and fitting pressure capacity is reduced.

Chemical Resistance

Plasson compression fittings comprise of a polypropylene copolymer body, NBR O-ring and acetal (POM) split ring. It is important when determining suitability for the transport of fluids containing chemicals that each of these materials are checked for compatibility. Where chemical resistance is not ideal for the split ring or O-ring, Plasson products made from alternative materials can be sourced that may be compatible.

Like polyethylene, polypropylene also has very good chemical resistance properties, however some differences exist, and checks should be made when determining suitability for the transport of chemicals.

Colours and Markings

Black bodies. Note some parts are of different colour. Plasson fittings are supplied in some international markets with a grey nut. (This is displayed in Plasson’s online 3D CAD drawings)

Range and Dimensions

Plassons' Compression ranges offer sizes from 16mm up to 160mm

Handling & Storage

Handling & Storage

Plasson fittings are often used above ground in harsh environmental conditions. Therefore there are no special protection requirements for handling and storage other than the fittings should not be exposed to impacts and be kept clean and free of debris or contaminants which may interfere with their installation or performance once installed.

Installation & Testing

Installation & Testing

Plasson’s sales catalogue is downloadable at www.plasson.com.au and contains easy to follow, illustrated installation instructions for each fitting type.

The Plasson range is compliant with AS/NZS 4129 which has extensive pressure, mechanical and material test requirements. Internal pressure testing limits are consistent with the requirements of the pipeline.

FAQ
Does the whole Plasson compression fitting range have 16 bar pressure capacity?

The majority of Plasson’s compression fitting range is rated to 16 bar, however some fittings have a lower pressure capacity – if in doubt, consult with Plasson sales staff or view Plasson’s online sales catalogue – visit www.plasson.com.au

What sort of tools do I need for installation?

No tools are required to install rural fittings.  On metric pipe sizes 40mm and above where fittings are hand tightened plus ½ turn with a wrench, Plasson ‘C’ spanners are recommended however common wrenches can also be used. Best Practice on metric pipe installations is to use a deburring tool on pipe ends to remove sharp edges to prevent damage to O rings.

What is the temperature range of the fittings?

Plasson fittings are designed for use on cold water (20 °C) pipelines. The fittings can be installed in low temperature environments, although care should be taken to prevent impacts approaching 0 °C – at low temperatures polypropylene can experience brittleness. Fittings can be used up to 50 °C, however both the pressure rating and life expectancy of the fitting is reduced. Check with Plasson staff if the fittings are to be used at elevated temperatures.

Are the fittings resistant to chemicals?

The fitting components are made from polypropylene, NBR and acetal which are resistant to a wide range of chemicals. However each material has different properties and if the fittings are to be used in non-water applications installers should always check with Plasson sales staff if in doubt about chemical compatibility.
